A MENTAL HEALTH PLAY
In January 2023, Diagnosed made its world premiere, addressing mental illness among women in the Black (BIPOC) community. The play toured in 2023 and continues today.
“...a vibrant, unvarnished view of the Black feminist experience with mental health.”
“Diagnosed is a powerful testament to the resilience and healing of Black women and women of color, inviting all audiences to connect with their stories through art and community.”

Diagnosed Synopsis
Lydia, an African American woman, inherits a family-owned boutique. While searching for her own inner peace, she creates a safe space for women to share their stories of hurt, trauma, and healing. Guided by the spirit of her ancestors, Lydia and the women confront their childhood and present-day demons. They soon realize that a boutique filled with women’s fashion and standout accessories isn’t the only common ground they share.
A DeeperLook
Diagnosed is a piece that highlights sisterhood, family, African tradition, forgiveness, healing, and more. The play has a cast of four to seven female-identifying women. You cannot talk about African traditions without mentioning the drum, the heartbeat, and the soul of most African communities. The drum is the centerpiece, and the eighth character of the work, which is a live drummer adding to the female-identifying cast. The drumming in the play symbolizes a call of the ancestors, battle, rituals, war, celebration, death, and healing as in African communities and ancestry.
Post-Show Discussion and Resources
After each performance, we facilitate a post-show discussion led by mental health professionals, with participation from the playwright and cast. Our goal is to ensure that our audiences feel supported after experiencing our 85-minute play. Additionally, we provide space in the lobby for local organizations to share mental health and wellness resources, business cards, and other materials to support the audience as they leave the production.
